The occasion for both comes propitious, when the old Doge Gradenigo index a public announcement to marry his very ugly daughter and at the same time decides to make his second wedding. Pantalone try to combine the marriage of his son Jacob, a young poet and artist, with the daughter of the Doge. Brabazio, on the other hand, decided to sacrifice his beautiful daughter Desdemona, a splendid poetess and singer, with the Doge.
In a mingling of marriages failed, kidnappings and spells, Desdemona marries a Pantaloon’s slave named Otello and Jacopo, lost the love for the fatal woman which has never seen, will become ensign of Otello that he had redeemed himself by his father.

Director’s remaks
The characters of any plot, told in the script only a part of their “complete” lives, what happens first and, especially, after the script, it is the search of actors and directors.
This is occult job to the odiens, where actors and directors define the whole facets of a character. As told Pirandello: the people die, but the characters live beyond the script itself.
For these reasons in this work we have fun to imagine and rebuild how Iago has become that Janus bifronte that Shakespeare masterfully describes. Or as a 'foreigner' and black renegade can be become the general of the Serenissima Venice and husband of the beautiful and noble Venetian Desdemona.
We have not search how the hatred and vengeance have led Otello and Iago to be damned, but from where it may be born this hatred. All these through the instruments, simultaneously tragic and comic, of the Commedia dell'Arte: a game, multilingualism, grotesque, paradox.
We have fun with the aim to engage in this work also the spectators who are witnessing this experiment.

Veneziainscena
Centro di Formazione e produzione Teatrale
The Centre was started in 1999 by a group of professionals with international experience,
who had been teaching together for many years at the Avogaria School “Giovanni
Poli”, recently closed. Their aim was creating in Venice a permanent centre for
Theatre education, focused on a broad and deep approach to the wide world of Theatre
studies. The Centre reserves a central place to Commedia dell’Arte, recognised as a great school and a big opportunity for
an actor professional development. This is the reason for this international workshop,
now at its twelth edition, with the same long experienced team of teachers. Since
2005 Veneziainscena has widened its range of activities by producing and organizing
theatrical events. An International Company is formed with professional actors from
different countries and its productions tour Italy and Europe. An International Centre
for the study and use of Theatre Masks from different traditions is opened in 2005.
The House of Comedy is created in february 2007, in collaboration with The Venician
City Museums. The House of Comedy is a centre for study, documentation, production
and staging of Commedia dell’Arte professional performances.
